Cool! Hummer’s dying!

I’ve never done that before. I’m rejoicing over the wind-down of a car company. Some people will lose their jobs, and many more will lose money, but everything considered, I do believe that the closing of the Hummer car company is good news. General Motors announced it, after Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Saturn, Hummer will be next.

Actually, it was not supposed to be. Hummer was said to be sold to Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Co., Ltd, one unknown chinese company. But for reasons that are not very clear, the deal couldn’t be completed. Some people say the chinese government blocked the deal, but nobody knows for sure what’s going on in China. So Hummer’s gonna go bust.

Actually, some new guy could come up, and make a last minute offer, but I don’t expect it. It’s too late. If it was to be, he would have come earlier. I understand there’s still some interesting short-term viability in the Hummer brand, but in the long term, the business-case is difficult. And risky! Just imagine that oil prices go up again. Hummer sales would quickly follow, going in the opposite direction…

I just hope most Hummer employees will get some other work for another GM brand. How about working on the Volt assembly line? Rumors are that the Volt will be pretty pricey, around $40.000. That’s still cheaper than a Hummer which use several times more gasoline! This shall convince anyone that the Hummer belongs to the past, and that the future is electric. The Hummer was the symbol of excess, it has no place in the 21st century.
